چکیده

Abstract Reconstrution of light intensity fluctuations from photon-counting data is a typical ill-posed inverse problem for non-Hermitian transforming operator. Such problems cannot be solved with the help of eigenfunction representation which diagonalizes the operator and simplifies the regularization of a quasi-solution. We describe an analytical method to solve this inverse problem using the Poisson transform operator representation in a mixed basis which diagonalizes the Poisson transform. On the base of the proposed method we performed numerical experiments with typical intensity distributions. We showed that the reconstruction procedure is stable and may be used even when the level of statistical errors is relatively high. In conclusion we describe the results of the inversion procedure in application to the processing of experimental data on photon counts statistics.

Counting photons: from the instruments to the applications

This lectures deals with photon counting in the framework of biophotonic measurements, that are usually characterized by very low count rates. First, photon counting is introduced from an experimental point of view. Then, the main equations of statistics of photon counts are derived, and their consequences in terms of so-called photon or shot noise are discussed. The moment-analysis is introduc...

The photon counting histogram in fluorescence fluctuation spectroscopy.

Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) is generally used to obtain information about the number of fluorescent particles in a small volume and the diffusion coefficient from the autocorrelation function of the fluorescence signal. Here we demonstrate that photon counting histogram (PCH) analysis constitutes a novel tool for extracting quantities from fluorescence fluctuation data, i.e., th...

Dynamical evolution of nonclassical properties in cavity quantum electrodynamics with a single trapped ion

In this paper, by considering a system consisting of a single two-level trapped ion interacting with a single-mode quantized radiation field inside a lossless cavity, the temporal evolution of the ionic and the cavity-field quantum statistical properties including photon-counting statistics, quantum fluctuations of the field quadratures and quantum fluctuations of the ionic dipole variables are...

Photon Counting Sampling of Phase Space

First complete experimental characterisation of the quantum state of a single light mode was demonstrated by Smithey et al. In their work, numerical tomographic algorithms were applied to reconstruct the Wigner function from homodyne statistics. Recently, a novel scheme for measuring the quantum state of light by photon counting has been proposed. In contrast to tomographic techniques, the newl...

Multiply stochastic representations for K distributions and their Poisson transforms

The K distribution is used in a number of areas of scientific endeavor. In optics, it provides a useful statistical description for fluctuations of the irradiance (and the electric field) of light that has been scattered or transmitted through random media (e.g., the turbulent atmosphere). The Poisson transform of the K distribution describes the photon-counting statistics of light whose irradi...
